Major new exhibition opens in September 2026 at the The Racquets Court Kitchen Garden
The National Trust Avebury is delighted to announce that artist Georgie Weedon will be Artist in Residence at Avebury in 2026, developing a new body of work inspired by one of Britain's most significant prehistoric landscapes.
Set within the heart of the Avebury World Heritage Site in Wiltshire, the residency will see Weedon respond to the extraordinary layers of history, nature and human connection that define the site. Her practice, known for its vibrancy, emotional depth and engagement with the natural world, will unfold across the year through making, reflection and public engagement.
A selection of Weedon's work is already installed and on display within Avebury Manor House, offering visitors an early encounter with her practice in situ. This existing presence within the Grade I listed building provides a foundation for the residency and a starting point for her evolving response to the wider landscape.
The residency will culminate in a major exhibition titled Ancient Pathways, opening at the newly converted The Racquets Court Kitchen Garden within Avebury Manor Gardens on 5th September 2026 and running until 5th November 2026.
A residency rooted in place and participation
Throughout 2026, Weedon will develop new work inspired by the ancient stone circle, the surrounding landscape and the historic spaces of Avebury Manor House and gardens. Visitors will be able to encounter her practice in real time through selected open studio moments and informal workshops.
Her work will explore themes of place, memory and connection, inviting audiences to experience Avebury not only as a historic site, but as a living creative landscape.
Exhibition: Ancient Pathways
The final exhibition will present a new collection of paintings and works on paper created during the residency. Installed in the The Racquets Court Kitchen Garden, Ancient Pathways will offer an immersive response to Avebury's landscape, combining contemporary artistic expression with one of the oldest ceremonial sites in the world.
The exhibition forms part of a wider programme of activity at Avebury during 2026, a significant year for the site and its cultural programming.
Hazel, Visitor Experience Manager at Avebury, said:
“Welcoming Georgie as Artist in Residence is a wonderful opportunity for Avebury. Her work responds so naturally to landscape and atmosphere, and we are excited to see how visitors engage with her creative process throughout the year. The exhibition Ancient Pathways in The Racquets Court Kitchen Garden will bring a fresh perspective to the site and offer something truly special for our visitors.”
Georgie Weedon, Artist
"Avebury is an extraordinary place where time feels layered and present at once. I am honoured to be working here as Artist in Residence in 2026. My hope is to create work that reflects the energy of the landscape and invites people to slow down, look closer and feel a deeper connection to place. Exhibiting in the The Racquets Court Kitchen Garden feels incredibly meaningful as part of that journey."
